Nine individuals have lost their lives and fifty are reported missing following Taiwan's most powerful earthquake in a quarter of a century.

Linda Chen, aged 48, recounted how her residence in downtown Hualien city was severely impacted by a prior earthquake in 2018, necessitating a relocation. However, her new apartment complex also sustained damage in the recent earthquake. Expressing concern over the possibility of the house collapsing, she reflected on the unpredictability of experiencing such devastation twice, hoping for fairness from a higher power. Chen admitted to feeling frightened and deeply anxious about the situation.
